My dad loved the tagline, “With a name like Smucker’s, it has to be good,” for the preserves industry titan, Smucker’s.

He thought it was clever that the Smucker family knew that their brand name was so lousy that they had better make great jams and jellies to survive.

Last Thursday, I was thinking about that simple Smucker’s “slogan,” as my dad called it, on my long travels back from Bay City, Texas. I’d just completed a story training for the leadership team at South Texas Project, the folks who run the state’s largest nuclear generating station.

For the most exciting technological leap of our era, could they have picked a label that sounds colder, more mechanical, or just plain fake?

The next morning, at 2 a.m., a thought stirred me awake: What if we reframe it as “artful intelligence”?
